Privacy Policy
Effective October 18, 2026
Salaam Traveler ("we," "us," "our") builds a halal-friendly travel app that plans itineraries around prayer times and halal dining. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the app, you agree to this policy.
Information We Collect
- Account information. Email address, password, and the display name you choose, used to create and secure your account. You sign in with your email address and password — the app does not offer sign-in with Google or Apple. You can also choose to add a phone number and date of birth to your profile.
- Location. With your permission, your device's precise location while you're using the app — used to show accurate local prayer times, nearby halal restaurants and mosques, and your position on the map. To do this, your coordinates are sent to our servers and to the service providers described below. We do not collect location in the background.
- Trips and content you create. Itineraries and the trip details you enter to create them (destination, dates, arrival and departure times, interests, and travel preferences such as your daily pace), plus saved places, favorites, notes, packing lists, and other preferences you enter.
- Photos. Salaam Traveler does not let you upload photos, including a profile picture.
- Community contributions. Halal confirmations you submit for a place (halal, partial, or not halal) are stored with your account and shown to other users in aggregate — for example, as vote counts on a place. They are not shown under your name.
- Device and diagnostic data. Our servers process basic technical information, such as your IP address and request details, to run the service and prevent abuse. The app does not currently send crash reports, contains no advertising tools, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- Notification data. If you turn on notifications, we store a push token for your device, a random identifier for this installation, your device's time zone and language setting, and the app version, so we can deliver trip reminders and itinerary updates at the right local time.
- Purchase information. Salaam Traveler is currently free and offers no in-app purchases. If you buy a subscription in a future version of the app, Apple's App Store and our subscription platform (RevenueCat) will process that purchase, and we will receive confirmation of your subscription status — we never see or store your payment card details.
How We Use Information
- To generate and personalize your itineraries, including sending relevant trip details to our AI provider to draft day-by-day plans.
- To show prayer times, nearby halal restaurants, and mosques based on your location or a destination you enter.
- To operate account features: sign-in, saving trips, favorites, and syncing across your devices.
- To send the trip reminders and itinerary updates you've opted into.
- To maintain and improve the app, fix bugs, and understand overall app usage in aggregate.
- To manage your subscription, if you buy one in a future version of the app.
- To keep community halal confirmations trustworthy — for example, by counting one confirmation per account for each place and limiting how often an account can submit them.
How Information Is Shared
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with the service providers that help us run the app, including:
- Firebase / Google Cloud — authentication and data storage.
- OpenAI — generating itinerary content. Our server sends OpenAI the trip details needed to draft your plan — destination, dates, arrival and departure times, interests, and travel preferences such as pace — along with the app's standard halal-dining and prayer settings, which are the same for every traveler. These requests do not include your name, email address, or account ID.
- Al-Adhan (api.aladhan.com) — prayer times. The app sends Al-Adhan your device's precise coordinates to show prayer times where you are, and your trip destination (its name or coordinates) to show prayer times for your trip. Al-Adhan does not receive your account details.
- Mapbox — maps, geocoding, and directions. The app and our server send Mapbox the places and coordinates being mapped, searched, or routed. Mapbox's map software also collects telemetry while you view a map — such as device and app details, how the map is used, and, while location access is on, your location — which Mapbox uses to operate and improve its maps.
- Google (through SearchAPI) and OpenStreetMap — restaurant, attraction, and mosque data. These services receive the location or destination being searched — which can be your current coordinates when you search nearby — not your account details.
- Pexels and Open-Meteo — destination photos and seasonal weather for your trip. Our server sends them your destination (and, for weather, its coordinates and your travel dates), not your account details.
- RevenueCat and Apple — subscription processing. The app may share your Salaam Traveler account ID and basic app and device details with RevenueCat, our subscription platform, so it can check whether your account has a subscription. If you buy a subscription in a future version of the app, Apple and RevenueCat process that purchase, and RevenueCat receives your App Store purchase records to confirm it.
- Apple — the app uses Apple's built-in iOS location services to turn your coordinates into a place name, such as your city.
- Expo — delivering push notifications to your device.
- Image hosts (such as Pexels, Unsplash, and Google) — photos of places and destinations load directly from these services, which receive standard request information such as your IP address.
If you choose to open a place in Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze, visit a venue's website, or share a trip image, that information goes to the app or site you pick, under its own privacy policy.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of Salaam Traveler and our users.
A Note on Halal Information
Halal status shown in the app is based on community confirmations and on evidence in public listing data, such as a place's name, category, description, and reviews, evaluated automatically — it is not a religious certification and is not verified by any certifying authority. Please confirm with the venue and use your own judgment, especially for stricter dietary needs.
Your Choices
- Location. You can disable location access at any time in your device settings; some features (like nearby search) will be limited without it.
- Notifications. You can turn off notifications in the app's notification settings or in your device settings.
- Map telemetry. You can stop sharing telemetry with Mapbox by tapping the info (ⓘ) button on any map, choosing Mapbox Telemetry, and then Stop Participating.
- Access, correction, and deletion. You can delete your account and its associated data at any time in the app: on the Home tab, tap the Settings (gear) icon, then tap Delete Account at the bottom of the screen. You can also request a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account by emailing privacy@salaamtraveler.com. We aim to complete emailed requests within 30 days.
Data Retention
We keep your account information, trips, favorites, notes, settings, and community halal confirmations for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, this data is permanently deleted from our database and your sign-in account is removed. If you buy a subscription in a future version of the app, purchase records held by Apple and RevenueCat are kept under their own policies, and deleting your account will not cancel that App Store subscription — you can cancel it in your iPhone's Settings app.
Children's Privacy
Salaam Traveler is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Data Security
We use industry-standard measures — including encryption in transit and access controls on our backend — to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.
International Users
Salaam Traveler is used by travelers worldwide. Your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate, which may have different data protection laws than your home country.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. We'll update the effective date above, and for material changes, we'll provide notice in the app.
